Como parte de la campaña Las 7 Mentiras del ELA, continuamos desmintiendo el siguiento “principio” esbozado por Alejandro García Padilla:
El ELA es soberano sobre todos los asuntos que no gobierna la Constitución Federal.
El único argumento legal a hacerse para justificar la soberanía del Estado Libre Asociado sobre asuntos que no gobierna la Constitución federal es basado en la décima enmienda a ese documento, aprobada en 1971.
La décima enmienda lee, “los poderes no delegados a los Estados Unidos por la Constitución, ni prohibidos por ella a los estados, están reservados a los estados o al pueblo.” Este lenguaje ha justificado oposición a varias leyes federales, incluyendo la reforma de salud. García Padilla es enemigo de Puerto Rico en Washington

WASHINGTON, DC – Tras el anuncio de que el senador García Padilla eligirá a su compañero de papeleta mediante encuestas internas, la Asociación de Estudiantes Estadistas de Puerto Rico (PRSSA, por sus siglas en inglés) compartió sus experiencias en la capital federal con el candidato PPD a la gobernación.
“Es risible que el senador se considere capaz de elegir un candidato satisfactorio a la comisaría residente,” expresó Eduardo Soto, Presidente de la Asociación. “En nuestras interacciones con él en Washington, DC, demostró no poseer el mejor interés de Puerto Rico en lo que a asuntos federales compete.” El liderato de la Asociación en Washington compartió con el ahora candidato en varias ocasiones durante mayo de 2010. En aquél entonces, la entidad conservadora The Heritage Foundation auspiciaba un foro en oposición al plebiscito de status presentado ante el Congreso federal.

Equal Citizenship is now Closer than Ever

The White House Task Force on Puerto Rico report came out today and it is now available at the PRSSA website. While providing unprecedented recommendations for economic and social development, the report also addressed the status issue and outlined the legitimate options for Puerto Rico’s political future.
Statehood and independence were described once again as viable options, but the report described the Commonwealth or Estado Libre Asociado as an acceptable choice. However, it did not undermine the ELA’s territorial nature. The report explicitly described the current status as subject to the Territorial Clause of Article Four of the Constitution. The Task Force expresses its preference for a two-tier self-determination process. The report’s recommended format creates two venues: a continued relationship with the federal government or separation via independence options. A continued relationship with the federal government encompasses only statehood or the current territorial status. The independence options include free association and stand-alone independence. Letter to Cong. Luis Gutierrez from President Eduardo Soto

Dear Congressman Gutierrez,
Today, you stood up to denounce the Government of Puerto Rico and its response to violent student protests. You also used the opportunity to address resting issues such as the Puerto Rico Bar Association and the elimination of its compulsory membership fees. You are widely regarded as a fearless champion for causes such as immigration reform, where I must admit that I stand with you. In fact, I stand with you on nearly every single controversial issue.
However, it troubles me that you insist on venturing into issues pertaining to Puerto Rico and the state of affairs there. As a member of Congress, you have consistently spoken against the people of Puerto Rico, rather than with them. You have opposed the government they elected, the political status option they prefer, and today you seemed appalled that its highest court would refuse to acknowledge a fictional right to strike. ¡Feliz Año 2011!/ Happy New Year!
A todos los miembros y amigos de PRSSA:
El Puerto Rico Statehood Students Association te desea un Feliz Año 2011 colmado de bendiciones y éxitos. El 2010 fue un año de mucho reto y altibajo, pero como siempre, perseveramos como confío perseveraremos en el 2011. En PRSSA no somos clarividentes, pero podemos augurar ciertas batallas en el 2011: lograr que se efectúe un plebiscito por el futuro político de Puerto Rico, lograr una mayoría incuestionable a favor de la estadidad en dicho plebiscito y defender la dignidad del puertorriqueño y los resultados de ese plebiscito para asegurar la estadidad en un futuro no muy lejano. El movimiento estadista creció y se diversificó muchísimo en el 2010. Nunca hemos estado tan preparados para refutar los ataques a nuestro mensaje de igualdad y nunca hemos estado tan cerca de una victoria definitiva.
