SAN JUAN, PR: La Asociación de Estudiantes Estadistas de Puerto Rico (PRSSA por sus siglas en inglés) reaccionó con beneplácito al anuncio del Gobernador de Puerto Rico y fundador de PRSSA Luis Fortuño sobre la presentación de legislación para celebrar un plebiscito de status. La asociación expresó su posición de que ha llegado el momento para resolver el centenario problema del status.

“Ha llegado el momento de acudir a las urnas y votar por nuestro futuro, por nuestra patria y por el Puerto Rico que todos queremos” indicó Eduardo Soto, Presidente de la asociación. “Hay apoyo en los tres partidos, dejando al pueblo puertorriqueño con el mismo enemigo en común: el ELA y sus defensores inmovilistas.” Read the rest of this entry »

Pedro Vázquez, the former Secretary of State under Gov. Carlos Romero Barceló, passed away on June 23, 2011. In 1979 and 1980, he was one of the most supportive public officials when fellow college student Luis Fortuño and Kenneth McClintock co-founded PRSSA, and was, along with Congressman Paul Simon, Don Luis A. Ferré and Governor Romero, a featured speaker at the first PRSSA Annual Convention at the Cerromar Hotel in the summer of 1980. Read the rest of this entry »

THE PRESIDENT:  Buenas tardes!  (Applause.)  It is good to be back in Puerto Rico.  (Applause.)  It is great to see so many familiar faces, so many advocates for the island.  First of all, I want to acknowledge Congressman Pierluisi is here.  Where is he?  Right over there.  (Applause.)  My great friend, Andres Lopez.  (Applause.)  Franciso Pavia.  (Applause.)  Senator Bhatia.  (Applause.)  Governor Fortuno.  (Applause.)  And I know that we’ve got some former governors here today, along with leaders of local parties, and of the House and the Senate.

I am so grateful for the unbelievable reception.  As you know, the last President to come to San Juan and address the people of Puerto Rico was John F. Kennedy, nearly 50 years ago.  (Applause.)  Now, at the time, I was about four months old — (laughter) — so my memory of this visit is a little hazy.  What I do remember is that when I came here to campaign, I promised that I would return as President of the United States.  (Applause.)  And although my hair is a little grayer — (applause) — than during my first visit, I am glad to be able to keep that promise to the people of Puerto Rico.  (Applause.) En el Informe de Casa Blanca hay otro asunto de enorme importancia que, aunque no necesariamente nos damos cuenta en el día a día, afecta TODOS los aspectos de nuestra vida…y es el asunto del status, o sea, el asunto de nuestra relación con los Estados Unidos, nación de la que somos ciudadanos.

Por primera vez en más de 112 años, los Estados Unidos, a través de su Presidente, nos han puesto en blanco y negro la ruta que debemos seguir—y que ellos están dispuestos a aceptar—para resolver, de una vez y por todas, el asunto de nuestro status político. Es una oportunidad HISTÓRICA que no podemos desaprovechar.

En Puerto Rico hemos logrado ya un consenso de que este asunto del status tenemos que resolverlo cuanto antes. Cada día vemos más claramente que el status—que nos tiene tan divididos como pueblo— es el principal obstáculo para JUNTOS echar adelante. Por ejemplo, en días recientes un grupo no partidista de expertos economistas declaró que Puerto Rico lleva en decadencia los pasados 50 años. Olvídate de si nuestro actual status nos trajo o no nos trajo beneficios en el pasado; lo cierto es que hoy en día hasta los que históricamente han defendido el Estado Libre Asociado, dicen que, como está, ya no sirve y que hay que cambiarlo. El Gobernador de Puerto Rico en su mensaje anual de presupuesto acaba de anunciar la creación de un Comité de Diálogo sobre el status de Puerto Rico, para discutir las opciones que tiene Puerto Rico en torno al problema del status. El Comité compuesto por nominados de cada Partido buscará una alternativa de consenso para resolver el status. Dear Congressman Gutierrez,

Today, you stood up to denounce the Government of Puerto Rico and its response to violent student protests. You also used the opportunity to address resting issues such as the Puerto Rico Bar Association and the elimination of its compulsory membership fees. You are widely regarded as a fearless champion for causes such as immigration reform, where I must admit that I stand with you. In fact, I stand with you on nearly every single controversial issue.

However, it troubles me that you insist on venturing into issues pertaining to Puerto Rico and the state of affairs there. As a member of Congress, you have consistently spoken against the people of Puerto Rico, rather than with them. You have opposed the government they elected, the political status option they prefer, and today you seemed appalled that its highest court would refuse to acknowledge a fictional right to strike. Politico has reported that potential Republican Party Presidential nominee Tim Pawlenty has not given thoughts to a running mate for the 2012 Elections, but that nonetheless, he has seen very promising individuals for the position, mentioning Puerto Rico’s Governor and former PRSSA President Luis Fortuño.
