Intern in Puerto Rico this Summer

The Washington Center has partnered with the Department of Veterans Affairs to offer summer 2011 internships for college students and recent graduates in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The VA’s Hispanic Career Program provides students with opportunities to build professional skills, participate in academic programming, and explore federal career options.

Applications will be accepted from students from all majors, but positions will likely be available to those in the following fields: finance, business, business administration, public administration, communications, marketing, health management, sciences, and pre-med.

Students selected for available positions will intern in VA offices in and around San Juan for 10 weeks and will receive significant financial assistance, including a $3,000 stipend, housing, and travel expenses.  If a student chooses not to live in housing arranged by TWC, his or her stipend will be increased.

Qualifications

Students must:

• have U.S. citizenship;
• be proficient in English;
• have a minimum GPA of 2.75;
• be available for a ten-week period beginning June 20, 2011;
• demonstrate experience and/or a strong interest in working for the federal government; and
• be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a four-year institution, or have received a degree within the past 18 months.

How to Apply

Applications will be accepted beginning Saturday, June 11.  Students must visit our application portal and create a username and password. They should then log in and start an internship application.  When prompted, students should select Option 4 for the “Summer 2011 Hispanic Career Program.”

When applying for the 2011 Summer Hispanic Career Program, students will be able to identify whether or not they intend to earn academic credit from their home institution for their participation; however, securing academic credit is not required to be considered for the Hispanic Career Program during the summer.

Students will be asked to upload their resume and an unofficial transcript. They will also need to identify their institution’s campus liaison. Contact TWC if you need assistance with this step.

There is no application fee for the 2011 Summer Hispanic Career Program. If a student is asked to submit a $60 application fee, he or she has selected the incorrect program option.

Deadline

The application portal will open beginning on Saturday, June 11.  To be most competitive, students are encouraged to apply by Wednesday, June 15.

Selection Process

Students will be notified of their placement status as soon as possible.  Additional documentation, including an official transcript and/or writing sample, may be required as the process moves along.
