Insular Consumers is a consumer-focused series born out of the frustration of Puerto Rican consumers with US companies. Puerto Rico as a unincorporated territory of the United States happen to be in what companies see as a legal gray area, where jurisdiction is not specified, despite the fact that all US laws apply in Puerto Rico. With the same currency, communications regulations, and even the same DVD region code as the 50 states, Puerto Rico should in theory be treated as any other state when it comes to commerce, yet as we have painfully discovered, that is not the case.

This series will focus on the treatment of consumers in Puerto Rico by companies mainly based on the 50 US States, highlighting the cases where Puerto Ricans are treated unfairly despite being US Citizens and residents in a US Territory. Let us know your suggestions for future posts in the contact section, or even better send your columns on a related topic and we will feature it here.

Our goal is one: highlight the discriminatory practices of certain companies, and hopefully, end their practices until there are no more insular consumers.
